Jay Wolpert wrote a script in 2001, Stuart Beattie rewrote it in early 2002, and Walt Disney Studios executives created a rough treatment in 2000. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer became involved in the project around that time; He hired Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio to write the script.[6] Having previously pitched a premise in the 1990s, Elliott and Rossio added a supernatural curse as a plot device to align the story with the original theme park ride. After that, Gore Verbinski became involved as a director.

Two continuations of Privateers of the Caribbean: In 2004, Elliott and Rossio developed a story arc for The Curse of the Black Pearl that would span both films. From February to September of 2005, filming took place in Palos Verdes, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Dominica, The Bahamas, and on sets built at Walt Disney Studios. It was shot simultaneously with At World's End, the series' third film.
On July 7, 2006, Dead Man's Chest was released in the United States. It received mixed reviews, with praise for its visual effects and performances by Johnny Depp and Bill Nighy, but criticism for its length and plot.

Captain Jack Sparrow, played by Johnny Depp, is on the hunt for the Trident of Poseidon to defeat Armando Salazar, played by Alejandro Bardem. Salazar is determined to kill every pirate on the sea and exact revenge on Sparrow for keeping him and his ghost crew in the Devil's Triangle. To defeat Salazar's ghostly crew, Jack teams up with Hector Barbossa (Rush), Henry (Thwaites), the son of Will Turner, young astronomer Carina Smyth (Scodelario), and Jack's first mate Joshamee Gibbs (McNally).
